Reconstruction of Sanciangko Bridge resumes
CEBU, Philippines — After a short pause due to design modifications, work on one of Cebu’s oldest bridges, the Sanciangko Bridge, has resumed.
This was disclosed by Barangay San Nicolas Proper Captain Clifford Niñal to The Freeman.
Niñal said that the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) original plan was to widen the bridge to four lanes.
However, it was shelved after community pushback and logistical concerns.
“Ila man untang palapdan, making it four lanes, pero pirti ng dugaya ana mahuman kon maoy sundon… Maong e as-in na lang ang kalapdon,” said Niñal, noting the urgency of completing the reconstruction to ease the burden of daily commuters.
The 1953 bridge, once a vital artery in downtown Cebu, was deemed structurally unsafe already due to severe swaying and deterioration.
“Grabe na kayo to siya mutay-og. Piligro na kaayo agian,” Niñal said, highlighting the urgent need for replacement.
Niñal also thanked Congressman Edu Rama for facilitating in replacing this bridge.
“Ako man gyud siya gihangyo ani nga matabangan unta mi sa DPWH kay piligro na lagi kaayo,” said Ninal.
Following inspection, demolition began in August of last year having first secured clearance from the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) due to its heritage status.
With the site now cleared of previous obstructions, Niñal said DPWH crews can proceed faster with the rebuild. — JG (FREEMAN)
