MANILA, Philippines — Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost — a dual citizen of the United States and Peru — has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, taking up the mantle of spiritual leader to 1.4 billion Catholics around the world.

His election came in the early hours of May 9 (Philippine time), with white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 12:08 a.m., signaling that the conclave had reached the decisive two-thirds vote.
